SOUTH OF ENGLAND IRISH SETTER CLUB – 13TH July 2014
CRITIQUE – BITCHES
I was so looking forward to judging outside but unfortunately due to the overnight rain and the rings not being cut this was not possible, even though most of the day was dry and warm.
Our breed shows to advantage when outside, therefore I will be generous and assume the inside ring could account for some rather strange movement, so will refrain from making further comment. However I was very disappointed with heads. Long and lean doesn’t mean without expression and stop, so many were plain and expressionless.
Bitches:
Minor Puppy: (10-2abs)
Muir – ROMARNE TICKLED mature puppy for 8 months. Pleasing head, strong bone, well made body. Moved soundly
Bell – THENDARA PEARLY QUEEN OF BALINTYNE 8 months. Close to winner, feminine head, elegant outline with well angulated quarters. Moved well.

Cox – TIROEN TO THE MANOR BORN elegant with a lovely head. Liked her overall conformation, she has good lay of shoulder and hindquarters with well turned stifles. Would like to see her in full coat. Moved with drive.
Pike – ORLANSET SARAH AT GLENURY not quite as elegant as 1 but has a pretty feminine head. Well angulated quarters. Moved OK
Stevenson – LOCHLORIEN NEW TRICKS
Graduate: (13-1abs)
Hall – CURROWHILL TICKLE PINK WITH GLENNARA Tall girl in full coat. Carries a beautiful head, long and lean but with ample stop and kind eye. Well angulated fore and aft. Elegant in outline. Good on the move.
Wilkins – BARDONHILL HETTY BAYLISS AMONG MARGRETWOODS this young lady has in my opinion the perfect head. Balanced, feminine with that lovely Irish expression. Good overall conformation. Not in the best of coat. Moved well.
Broadgate/Rose-Hay – CATALUNA BETCHA BY GOLLY WOW
Post Graduate: (7-2abs)
Mugford – LYNWOOD HAPPY AS A LARK what can I say about her for me she just oozes quality. From the tip of her nose to her tail she looked so balanced. Good front neck and shoulders. Gentle slope to her top line correct tailset. Well angulated hindquarters with good width of second thigh. In full coat and she moved round the ring with great animation and drive. Was pleased to award her 1st CC and RBIS
Ciechonska – MILLCROFT MOON AND STARS AT AOIBHEANNE not disgraced by standing 2ndto winner. Different in shape and not the elegance I look for. Head is long and lean but lacked definition. As I expected she moved with enthusiasm and drive.
Stevenson – LOCHLORIEN SCULLY FOXES ANDLEYO
Minor Limit: (2)
Millington – MILLCROFT MOON GYPSY FOR TATSBRO elegant bitch with good overall conformation. Good front and rear angulations. Moved OK
Henson – MILLCROFT CRYSTAL MOON MAKES TATSBRO pretty head a little on the big side for me and rather square in outline which loses elegance and femininity. Moved OK.
Mid Limit: (10-1abs)
Holley – GWENDARIFF SODA POP TO WYNJILL I consider her to be the correct size for a bitch and a clear winner in this class. Sweet and feminine head with the true Irish expression. Straight front with small tight feet. Good neck and shoulders, gently sloping top line. Excellent hindquarters which she uses on the move. Close up for the RCC.
Kolbach – COPPER’S WINE’ ROSES very different from winner, longer cast body. Feminine head. Good front and rear angulations. In good coat and moved well
Lippett – NEATHAMILL ISABELLA AT CLONAGEERA
Limit: (13-3abs)
Roberts – COLANME MORGANA nice sized girl feminine throughout. Liked her overall conformation and balance. Moved well
Phillips – DERRYDORE WOOD LARK Along similar lines to the winner. Nice type of head which I preferred to 1. Good on the move.
Humphries – HENALEAS CARRY ON FLIRTING
Open: (10-2abs)
Hogsflesh – SH.CH. LYNGOR LIVING WATER have watched this girl since a puppy and was thrilled when she gained her title. For me she is just a little too big but saying that could not be denied this place. Well defined head good overall conformation. In tip top condition and moves with animation and drive.
King – KIRKAVAGH EBADIYLA Very elegant and feminine throughout. Has prettiest of heads with plenty of stop and dark eye. In full coat and looked a picture standing, let herself down a little on the move.
Hunter – SH.CH. FAIRHAVEN LOUISE MOUNTBATTEN AT BRAIDMOUNT
Veteran: (10-4)
Most in this class I didn’t consider veterans. At 7 years an Irish Setter is still capable of winning well in other classes. Perhaps it is time the age limit was raised.
Rutherford – AM.CH. WITCHBROOKE CLONAGEERA COROT just short of 8 years a top quality girl in super coat. Feminine throughout with the best of heads. Good forequarters neck and top line. Super hindquarters which she uses to advantage on the move. Would love to have seen her in her prime. RCC
Russell – MELMARA RUBY TUESDAY nice size and looked really well for nearly 9 years. Pretty head, balanced construction, good front and rear angles. In super coat sound and happy on the move.
Waterton – LYNWOOD STRANDS OF SILK AT SANDSTREAM
Lynne Dale
CRITIQUE – DOGS
A lovely friendly show with very sporting exhibitors.
BIS On the referee, Mrs Bryden’s decision, was my dog CC winner
Mrs EDDEN & CROCKER’S SH CH MEADWAY MORRISEY
Res BIS & BOS was the bitch from Post Grad Mr & Mrs MUGFORD’S LYNWOOD HAPPY AS A LARK. On the referee’s decision BEST PUPPY went to the bitch Mrs KAY’s BERFIELD KAESHA.
BEST VETERAN was also a bitch, the gorgeous AM CH WITCHBROOKE CLONAGEERA CORO, owner Mrs RUTHERFORD.
I would very much like to thank both my stewards and the officers of the club for making my day both seam free and happy!
Interesting that 6 classes were won by dogs sired by Multi Ch SUMARIC SHADOW OF Mr JINGLES and my Dog CC was ½ brother to my Bitch CC & Res BCC last time I judged the breed.
MINOR PUPPY D (6)
1st (BEST PUPPY DOG) ROMARNE TAITTINGER
Cracking Puppy, lovely to go over, beautiful head and the most glorious expression. Excellent front and shoulder set, correct topline and rear, deep for age and true moving. Just a slight tendency to sidewind which he will get out of when his rear catches up with his front. Doesn’t need to grow on any more!
2nd THENDARA COMMITMENT
Raking youngster, coat a bit too wavy as yet, and he is a touch over done in rear angulation. Fair front, down on one front foot at the moment. Lovely neck and flowing lines.
3RD DAISYCUTTER HOCUS POCUS
PUPPY D (10)
1st ROMARNE TAITTINGER
2nd BERFIELD KALIF AT DAVSET
Just needs to tighten up front and rear, medium size, good length to height proportions and not too long in loin, was a bit silly to go over to start with, but pulled himself together later. Promising mover and nice for type.
3RD ANLORY TAMHILL TAF
JUNIOR D (16)
1st AMBERWAVE FANTABULOUS
Super typy outline, especially in profile movement. Well balanced, good head, with firm jaws, correct muzzle width and depth. Front well under him, not too long in back, good behind but can still widen a touch here. In good coat and muscle tone.
2nd GLENVARNA FIRE AND ICE AT HOOLEY
Another very pleasing “all male” not overdone in rear angulation and he has a striking outline. Sound mover, well set tail, good flat coat. Needs a bit more time, but very promising for type and quality as were the others placed.
3RD DANAWAY DISTINGUISHED
YEARLING D ( 11)
A mixed bag here!
1st BRINARA PRIVATE EYE
Good for size and proportionate of height to length, reasonable front, but he could have more forechest. Good small, tight feet, carries his head nicely, correct topline and short loin, fair quarters, and well set tail.
2 SEIS Breed Championship Show CRITIQUE Dog Judge Zena Thorn-Andrews
2nd AMBLIN’S SWEET WILLIAM
Masculine and stands on good legs and feet. Pleasing head, gently curved skull, ears set low, better shoulder than above but he was thin with prominent hip bones and not moving as well in rear. I thought him very promising and hope he puts on a bit more weight and muscle.
3RD BARDONHILL TOP GUN at ORSTONE
MAIDEN D (10)
1st GLENVARNA BO DIDDLEY
2nd BERFIELD KALIF at DAVSET

2ND ANLORY KELTIC SPIRIT at DAVSET
Smart and masculine, lovely eye set, and kind expression! Excellent muscle tone and body condition, a very fit dog. Stands on good legs and tight thick feet. Excellent colour and pigment. Rear angulation OK, but he turns his hocks out going away. Good lengthy stride in profile.
3RD AMBLIN SWEET WILLIAM
GRADUATE D (7)
1ST BRABROOK DANNY BOY
A lovely boy, flat and silky feathering, which was nice to see in a ‘sea’ of curly coats! A touch throaty perhaps. Good front, shoulder blades set a little too wide at the withers though. Beautiful body and correct topline and croup. Powerful impressive rear, not overdone in angulation. A sound, free and active mover.
2ND SUTERESETT REBEL ROUSER WITH BALBRIGGAN
Another lovely boy, very precise and true moving. Just very long in loin and just wish he was a mite more balanced for proportions. I liked his head, well set eyes, strong neck, well boned, deep chest not too wide and excellent rear.
3RD ANLORY KELTIC BLUE SKY JW
POST GRADUATE D (19)
A lovely class, spoilt for choice!
1ST BRABROOK DANNY BOY
2ND TOGIPOTO ICE GOD at GLENVARNA
This boy was choking on the lead a little and putting all his weight onto his forehand. Fit and nicely put down with a flat coat, wonderful outline and proportions. I liked his head and correct muzzle strength and width, good topline. Sound up and down, just pulling on the lead in profile movement.
3RD MILLCROFT POACHERS MOON OF VICTORIAVIEW
2 SEIS Breed Championship Show CRITIQUE Dog Judge Zena Thorn-Andrews
MINOR LIMIT D (4)
1ST ANLORY THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS over JULESET JW (Res CC)
Smart and sound, a lovely moving dog, graceful, and elegant but still behaving like a puppy! Liked his head and equal length of muzzle to back skull, beautiful eyes, sound front, and shoulders set nicely back, good bone and tight feet, well set tail and good width across the quarters. 5 years old and looking magnificent.
2ND THENDARA DIZZIE RASCAL RAPS CLANOVENTA
Not going to put himself out and move with any enthusiasm, just a little soft in pasterns. Pleasing head and expression. Strong neck, deep chest, OK in rear. Good coat and colour.
3RD BARDONHILL SWIFT EAGLE
MID LIMIT D (5)
1ST MAYFRED MR MAGNIFICO
A little broad in back skull, excellent size and type, masculine without being huge! Good firm front and lay back of shoulder. Correct topline and quarters, well set and carried tail, smart and sound, with an efficient ground covering action in profile.
2ND RIVERBRUE ZEUS JW
A little more upright in shoulders and lacking forechest. Lovely head and expression. Good neck, deep enough. A mite overdone in rear angulation, and he sidewinds up and back.
3RD ANLORY KELTIC RHYTHEM
LIMIT D (11)
Lovely Class!
1ST DEACONARA DANSE DE BLUE Avec DOTCOMSETTER JW
Medium size, not too long for his height, pleasing head but ears set a little high (and badly trimmed) Excellent front and forechest, good legs and feet. Correct couplings and slope of topline, powerful impressive rear and he is absolutely sound all ways.
2ND EMBER RED HOT CHILLI PEPPER of QUENSHA (SWE.IMP)
Beautifully presented, also appealed for head, better ear set than winner but he is a little long in loin and moving close going away. Looked spectacular standing and was very well presented and handled.
3RD COPPERSHELL CASANOVAH JW ShCM
OPEN D (8)
1ST Sh Ch MEADWAY MORRISEY (CC BOB BIS)
Good for size and proportions, nice to go over and in good condition. A little more stop than ideal maybe. He is a cracking boy in lovely bloom, excellent legs and tight small thick feet. Well constructed right through.
2ND Sh Ch SUTERESETT MILKY WAY with SCARLETTI JW
Taller and not the muscle tone of winner, also holds himself nicely going around and neat rear. A little slack in pasterns otherwise OK in body, topline and croup. Well handled and shown.
3RD Sh Ch THENDARA POT NOODLE JW
VETERAN D (1)
1ST KERRIMERE JUST RUMOURS
8 year old. Coat a bit sparse and not in full bloom. Moved OK & held his topline. Well set tail. A little long for his height.
